According to Deadline Hollywood, Mulligan got the call from Luhrmann on the red carpet—and promptly burst into tears. (In fairness, I might too if I was told I’d be playing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby.) “I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan,’ ” Lurhmann said in a statement to Deadline.
